Kratom is a tree that grows naturally in southeastern regions of Asia. The native people of these regions have traditionally used kratom as a remedy for many conditions by chewing its leaves. Nowadays, kratom is becoming popular worldwide thanks to its medical properties and benefits. If you have not tried kratom yet, but have come across this blog, that means you may be wondering what kratom can do for you and its effects.
Kratom active elements are alkaloids that act on the opioid receptors in the brain the in same way opiates do. It is thanks to these alkaloids (like mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragyine) that kratom is effective for many conditions. Kratom can relieve pain, produce euphoria, enhance concentration and memory, improve sociability and even mitigate the symptoms of opiate withdrawal.
Also, kratom is not an opiate. Therefore it does not have the strong side effects of opiates. And it will not cause either the addiction or the withdrawal symptoms of opiates.
Kratom General Effects and Uses
Kratom’s most common effects and uses include:
- Pain relief
- Stomach soothing and nausea relief
- Mood enhancement and euphoria
- Anxiety relief
- Opiates withdrawal
Bear in mind that kratom effects will depend on a series of factors, especially the kratom strain and the dosage you are taking.
Effects of the Different Kratom Strains
The different kratom strains are determined by the color of the vein and middle stems of the kratom leaf. These kratom stems and veins sometimes are even removed from the leaf and turned into powder or extracts. Kratom alkaloids have different effects, and each type of kratom has a different amount of these elements. For instance, mitragynine has a more euphoric effect, while 7-hydroxymitragyine is more sedative.
Kratom strains can be red, white or green (you may also find yellow strains, but these are hybrids, not real kratom varieties). Each strain not only will cause different effects: but the duration will also vary depending on the variety. Mind that, in the case of kratom extracts and enhanced products, the effects can last up to 10 hours.
White Kratom Strains
This kratom strain contains a higher amount of mitragynine and is the perfect choice to enhance concentration and boost your energy. It is also a great ally against depression. Because of its euphoric properties, you should take white kratom strains only during the daytime. Its effects last between 3 and 5 hours.
Red Kratom Strains
These are the kratom strains with the most calming, sedative effects, thanks to the 7-hydroxymitragyine. Red kratom is an excellent pain reliever. It also seems to be the best kratom type to mitigate anxiety. Red kratom strains are recommended for chronic pain conditions, musculoskeletal injuries or diseases, insomnia or anxiety. The effects of red kratom strains usually last for about 5 hours. However, there are certain red kratom types which seem to last up to 10 hours.
Green Kratom Strains
Green kratom varieties act like a mix of white and red strains. It is stimulating and improves mood and concentration, like the white kratom strains, but its effects are more subtle. People with social phobia favor green kratom strains, as they contribute to growing sociability. It is better not to take green kratom in the evening or before going to bed, as it can disrupt sleep. The effects of the green kratom strains can last up to 8 hours.
Kratom Effects Depending on the Dosage
As a rule, smaller kratom dosages (2 – 5 grams) produce more stimulating, even euphoric effects. On the other hand, higher doses (5 – 8 grams) will bring about calming, sedative effects. Try to avoid doses higher than 8 grams, as the effects can be too intense and might even produce stupor-like effects. Also, the higher dose, the more prompted you are to suffer kratom side effects, which can include nausea, dizziness or vomiting.
These are the suggested general doses for raw kratom powder. Extracts and enhanced kratom products are remarkably more potent, so in these cases, the doses should be smaller.
Depending on the dosage and on whether the stomach is empty or you have eaten just before taking the kratom, you will feel the effects of kratom between 20 minutes and one hour (even one hour and a half) after the intake. For instance, if you take a high dose of kratom before a meal, you could notice the first effects within 20 and 40 minutes. But if you take it just after eating, it could take up to an hour and a half to notice any effects.
When taken in capsules, kratom effects will take longer, as the capsule needs to be assimilated by your stomach first.
In any case, and in order to avoid tolerance, kratom should not be consumed more than once a day and never more than thrice per week, not on consecutive days.
