Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tree native to Southeastern Asia, member of the coffee plant family. For centuries, native people from Malaysia, Thailand or Indonesia have been chewing kratom fresh leaves to enjoy their benefits. Nowadays, kratom has gained a lot of popularity across the world thanks to its properties. More and more people are using kratom as a natural remedy to treat anxiety, relieve pain, mitigate depression, fight insomnia and even to cope with the symptoms of opiate withdrawal.

But while in its native land people have usually consumed kratom by chewing its fresh leaves, in the rest of the world kratom is commonly found as dried leaves, powder or kratom extracts such as tincture or resin. And the most common way of ingesting kratom is by brewing it into a tea. But did you know you can make your kratom tea in a coffee maker, or even with a re-usable coffee capsule? Tips to Make Kratom Tea in a Coffee Maker

To extract the kratom alkaloids more efficiently, you can add one or two tablespoons of lemon juice (more than that could make the kratom tea too sour). Also, you can add any sweetener you like to your tea: honey, sugar, cinnamon… You can also mix it with almond or rice milk. Dairy milk is not recommended since there are users who report that it erases the effects of kratom. However, there are many other users who enjoy mixing their kratom tea with milk and have never experienced any problems. So, if you are fond of milk tea, you could give it a try and check if it works for you.

If you have made extra tea, you can keep the tea left in the refrigerator. But make sure you are storing it properly!

By doing a double or even a triple brew to your tea, you will be extracting the highest number of alkaloids from the kratom powder. To do this, you only need to pour the tea back into the water reservoir and run it through the coffee maker again, even for an additional third time. Remember to rinse out the water reservoir afterward!

Kratom Tea in a Coffee Press

A coffee press is a type of coffee maker that does not use a paper filter and requires a more manual process than other coffee makers. People also know coffee presses as French presses. Those who seek a stronger, more bitter coffee prefer french presses. This special taste is achieved by retaining oils that otherwise would be lost if using a drip coffee maker.

The process to make kratom tea in a French press is as follows:

Remove the lid with the plunger from the coffee press and pour your dosage of kratom into the bottom of the press.

Heat water until reaches around 200ºF and pour it into the press.

Cover the press with the lid again, lift the plunger and stir.

Let it brew for 5 — 10 minutes (the brewing time will depend on the strength you desire).

Slowly press down the plunger all the way down. Pour the tea kratom in a mug and enjoy it.

A great advantage of using a French press is that you can adjust the timing, the amount of water and even the pressing to suit your taste.

Reusable Coffee Pods to Make Kratom Tea

Thanks to their convenience, pod coffee makers have become extremely popular since the early 2000s. They are incredibly easy to use and spare you all the fuss of preparing a coffee. You just need to place the coffee pod inside the coffee machine, fill the reservoir with water, press a button and wait for the coffee to pour.

Nowadays you can find reusable pods for many of the most popular pod coffee makers. Nespresso, Dolce Gusto or Keurig, among others, have reusable capsules that can be filled with your favorite coffee, tea or even kratom. Just add your dosage of kratom to the refillable pod, put the pod in the coffee maker and the kratom tea will be poured out from the machine.

If you are using a pod coffee maker you can also re-brew your kratom tea for a higher alkaloid extraction. But bear in mind that the water reservoir of this type of coffee maker is intended for water, not for any other type of liquid. So, make sure you rinse the reservoir thoroughly once you’re finished.

Now that you know how to make kratom tea in a coffee maker, will you try it?

  1. Made this just now. Brewed it through coffee maker 4 times. Put chai tea bag into cup and had 4 nice cups of chai-kratom tea with some tupelo (a buttery flavored honey), was very palatable. Run one full coffee pot of water back through reservoir to get the kratom out. My dear bf would not like the taste of kratom in his coffee tomorrow morning

  2. It took a bit of time but I do not mind the taste of Kratom any more. After trying multiple ways to take it, I tried it through the coffee maker and that was just right. I brew Ganesh Maeng Da or Red Bali through three times and it was a beautiful rich golden color that tastes great with a packet of True Lemon to bring out a bit of flavor. I, too, clean the coffee maker afterwards because the hubby would not appreciate kratom flavored coffee.

  3. Where does adding citric ingredient (lemon) come into play? Most post about Kratom tea highly recommend adding this to preserve alkaloids.
